Dramalab
is a Malaysian based theatre company that believes in the importance
and viability of local theatre and artistic expression. Since it's inception
five years ago, Dramalab has successfully provide a fertile and secure
place for some of Malaysia's newest writing talents through a series
of its Writers Workshop, the third of which is planned for later this
year.
In
December 1998, Dramalab was a joint first prizewinner in the performing
arts category of the Red Ribbon Media Awards. This was for a
series of monologues entitled Talking AIDS,
which will be reprised at the end of October 1999 for the 5th International
Conference on Aids Awareness in the Asia Pacific (ICAP) hosted by
the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.
February
1999 followed with another first for Dramalab, who together with the
Singapore Repertory Theatre, one of Singapore's largest theatre
companies, presented Jit Murad's
provocative comedy Gold Rain And Hail Stones
at the Raffles Hotel. The play swept audiences off their feet and received
as much critical acclaim there and it did when it premiered in Kuala
Lumpur in 1994. Two more successful runs followed this in 1998 with
the original director, Zahim Albakri
and actors, Jit Murad and Lin
Jaafar.
Dramalab's
production of A Flight Delayed in
March this year saw the talented Azean Irdawaty,
nine-time best actress of Malaysian television and film shine in her
very first English theatre performance. It also heralded the return
to stage of consummate actress Ida Nerina
amongst a cast of over 13 young and enthusiastic newcomers. Written
by first time playwright Yasmin Yaacob,
this play was shortlist from Dramalab and Five
Art Centre's Writers Workshop II.
Also
from the same workshop is a short play currently being rehearsed for
a run in November and in the production pipeline for the new millennium
are four other new plays. These are all written by young and vibrant
Malaysians who have something valid and important to say. Stories to
tell that will make you think, feel, laugh, cry and smile in familiar
recognition.
In
producing these and other plays, Dramalab hopes to continue to
give audiences intelligent and interesting theatre that also has resonance
and value in a local and international context.
